The 2006 Launois Special Club is a standout Champagne, made from two old, massal selected Grand Cru plots on the Launois estate. The first plot is the Chenets in the mid slope of Oger, very close to the Belles Voyes of Bonville fame. This site was planted back in 1947, just after the 2nd world war. The other plot they refer to simply as Cramant, from the grand cru of the same name and was planted in 1952. The nose reminds me of chanterelle mushrooms in cream and brioche, and the impression on the palate is both decadent and powerful. I think this is an easy Champagne to compare to the Comtes from Taittinger, but with more back end drive and chalky sparkle. This drinks great now, and bottles from the sixties are still going strong!
