1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien

The epitome of classic claret. Perfect balance, gorgeous ruby color with brick edge; cedar notes and herbal overtones marry with understated cherry fruit. This is a rarity. In a highly inflated market, 1970 Ducru Beaucaillou is worth the price. Clyde rates this as one of the best 1970 Bordeaux you could find; rich, round and full. (Clyde Beffa Jr.) A perfect five stars from Michael Broadbent: "One of the best of the 1970s. Three recent though variable notes. Deep; harmonious; sweet, rich, perfect balance and condition. Most recently: not very clear cut, but good. Last tasted March 2005." (Pocket Vintage Wine Companion) And 90 points Neal Martin: "Served at the chateau at their Vinexpo banquet from magnum and despite the perfect provenance, this did nothing to convince me that the‰۪ 70 is in gradual decline. The bouquet has a slight mustiness to it, Provencal herbs, saddle leather, hints of black tea, cedar and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied, well balanced but the fruit seems a little faded, as if the contrast has been dialled down. Nevertheless, it remains commendably elegant towards the finish that seems a little sharp and volatile. This was such a fabulous wine a decade ago but I would drink bottles now rather than later.
